Like most professions, there is some lingo that is associated with the cadet corps. Here are some common ones: FTX – Field Training Exercise – The cadets go out in the ‘field’ to practice what they are learning. CO – Commanding Officer – in this case Captain Hurst is the CO of our corps – the boss! CI – Civilian Instructor Star Level – As cadets pass each level of instruction, they obtain different star levels. The first level they can achieve is green, then red, silver, and gold, {NSCE -National Star Certification Exam}. Ranks – All cadets start as ‘cadet’, and through promotions they can move to Signalman [Sig] (Private), Corporal [Cpl], Master Corporal [MCpl], Sergeant [Sgt], Warrant Officer [WO], Master Warrant Officer [MWO], and Chief Warrant Officer [CWO]. Officer Ranks – They start with Officer Cadet, 2nd Lieutenant, Lieutenant, Captain, Major, Lieutenant Colonel, Colonel, Brigadier General, Major General, Lieutenant General, General. 24 Hour Clock -- The army uses a 24 hour clock, so you will hear things like 2000 [pronounced 20 hundred or 20 hundred hours], etc. For example, our parent meetings are from 1730 – 2100 the first Monday night of each month.
